Dr. Polona Pičman Štefančič is Director of Rea IT Research Centre, Slovenia. Previously, she was Research Associate at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, and has served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law. She is national delegate to the Technical Committee 9 of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), a member of e-Justice Committee of the Slovenian Ministry of Justice, and a board member of the Institute for Electronic Participation. Since 2003, she is also Gartner, Inc representative in Slovenia. Her research focuses on legal conditions that are most likely to be conducive to successful e-democracy initiatives, and she is currently engaged in the EU project Puzzled by Policy.

Dr. Polona Pičman Štefančič holds Doctorate of Science from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Law. As Classical Flautist and Professor of Flute, she also holds a BA from the Music Academy. She was awarded Fulbright scholarship and Zois scholarship for talented students. She has won several awards for her research work, among others the most prestigious Prešern Award from the University of Ljubljana, and the Award of Slovenian Government Public Relations and Media Office.


Her latest book is called e-Democracy (Uradni list Republike Slovenije 2008). She is also a co-author of the book Prelude to Democracy: Civil Society and Freedom of Public Communication; her opus includes numerous articles, essays, and chapters on civil society, democracy, lobbying and e-government.
